Bloomington teachers Whitney Determan and Kathryn Haddad have been named this year’s TIES Minnesota Technology Leader Award winners.

The award recognizes teachers who integrate technology in the classroom to improve E-12 education. Determan and Haddad will receive their awards at a TIES conference on Tuesday, Dec. 12.

Determan is a first grade teacher at Indian Mounds Elementary School. She has implemented a flexible learning model using technology to give students a choice in what they want to learn and when. She encourages students to share, collaborate, think out loud, be creative and make their learning visible. Determan is a Seesaw Ambassador and Curriculum Technology Advocate for her school and facilitates district professional development, sharing her expertise and passion for technology and leading fellow teachers to adopt new and innovative practices.

Kathryn Haddad has taught English language arts for the district for 18 years, and is currently the English department chair at Kennedy High School. Haddad encourages students to share ideas and connect using digital tools and instructional methods within her Moodle courses. She also contributed to the development of Bloomington’s online learning program, which will offer courses taught by district teachers using district curriculum. Haddad is currently writing an interactive online course for English 12 Humanities which she will teach next year.
